ABOUT Paula

A social ANTHROPOLOGIST TURNED PHOTOGRAPHER,
BRINGING TOGETHER WORDS AND IMAGES
When I left Brazil for London in 2015, I was working as a freelance researcher in anthropology, collaborating with Brazilian and North American universities, NGOs and charities. Although I greatly enjoyed the freedom of working remotely, after all, it allowed me to move to London and fall in love with the city, something was missing.
Since my university days, creative work had always occupied a parallel space in my life, and I regularly collaborated on projects led by friends. Looking back, what drew me to those projects was the possibility of communicating through images rather than words, something my academic work could only do to a limited extent.
I decided I would no longer postpone my dream of working in a creative profession. To train as a photographer, I experimented with different areas of photography - interiors, products, families, children - but portrait and documentary photography were always where I wanted to be as they allow me to bring a visual dimension to the social questions I've been interested in since the start of my career as a social anthropologist.
I now live in London with my husband and two cats, where I grow gardens, knit and make portraits.
